Aiaa 2002-1766 Size Effects in the Compressive Crushing of Honeycombs

چکیده
The effect of cell size on the out of plane compressive crushing response of circular cell polycarbonate honeycomb is presented. Over 100 experiments were conducted on specimens ranging in size from 1 to 169 cells (number of cells=N). Experiments showed that for N<19 there was a significant increase in crushing load. The maximum crushing load was observed where N=7. Finite element (FE) analysis was used to better understand the behavior of the specimens during crushing and to validate experimental results. Currently a FE model has been developed for N=7 cells, and in the future will be expanded for different values of N (N=1-169) with a view to establishing the reasons for size effects.

(2010), doi:10.1016/j.ijsolst The in-plane dynamic crushing of two dimensional honeycombs with both regular hexagonal and irregular arrangements was investigated using detailed finite element models. The energy absorption of honeycombs made of a linear elastic-perfectly plastic material with constant and functionally ...
متن کاملQuasistatic Deformation and Failure Modes of Composite Square Honeycombs
Carbon fibre epoxy matrix composite honeycombs have been fabricated by slotting, assembling and adhesively bonding composite laminate sheets with various fibre architectures. Their out-of-plane compressive and in-plane shear responses were measured as a function of relative density, ratio of the cell height to width and the number of cells in the specimen. The measurements indicate that the res...
متن کاملImpact resistance and energy absorption of regular and functionally graded hexagonal honeycombs with cell wall material strain hardening
This paper highlights the effects of cell wall material strain hardening and density functional gradation (FG) on in-plane constant-velocity dynamic crushing response and impact behavior of hexagonal honeycombs. Results show that cell wall material strain hardening influences the distinct deformation modes induced by crushing velocity generally observed in regular hexagonal honeycombs. This is ...
متن کاملThe out-of-plane compressive behavior of metallic honeycombs
Stainless steel square-honeycombs have been manufactured by slotting together steel sheets and then brazing the assembly. Their out-of-plane compressive response has been measured as a function of the relative density, the ratio of specimen height to cell size, and the degree of constraint associated with bonding of the honeycomb to face-sheets. It has been found that, for the practical range o...
متن کاملAN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON IMPROVING THE MEDIUM AND LATE-AGE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS OF CLASS G OIL WELL CEMENT
In this study, the effects of particle size distribution improvement and dense packing techniques on the 28- and 90-day compressive strengths of class G oil well cement have been investigated. It was observed that limited improvements in the particle size distribution of cement (regarding industrial possibilities) cannot result in a significant increase in 28- and 90-day compressive strengths. ...
